Getting your heating and hot water back

M Spencer Plumbing & Heating is a plumbing and heating firm based in Chesterfield, serving Clay Cross, Dronfield and the surrounding area, and we carry out boiler repairs in Chesterfield for homeowners and landlords.

We find the fault with a flue gas analyser and the manufacturer's own fault-finding steps, so we replace the part that has failed rather than guessing, and we keep common spares in the van for faster fixes.

Getting your heating and hot water back

How It Works

01

Emergency or Booked Call

Get in touch any time for a breakdown, or book a daytime visit for a fault that can wait. Tell us the boiler's make, model and any fault code, so we can bring the right parts.

02

On‑site Diagnostics

Our Gas Safe registered engineer checks pressure, flow, ignition and combustion, following the manufacturer's diagnostic steps to find the cause. We explain what has failed and your options before the repair goes ahead.

03

Repair, Test and Report

Where the part is on the van, we fix it on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we make the boiler safe and come back to fit it. Every repair ends with safety and efficiency tests and a written report.

What you can expect from us

Registered and accredited

Gas Safe registered for gas work (number 201500) and HETAS registered for solid fuel. We're Ideal Max Accredited, and we also work on Viessmann, Intergas, Vokera, ATAG and Alpha boilers.

Here when it breaks down

We take emergency calls around the clock and put households without heating or hot water first, especially where someone is vulnerable.

27 years' local experience

Decades servicing homes across Chesterfield, Sheffield and the Peak District means faster fault-finding and practical, long-lasting repairs.

Boiler faults we fix

The faults we see most often are ignition faults, where the boiler tries to light but locks out, and pump failures, when the boiler fires but the radiators stay cold. Pressure loss is common too, from a leak, a faulty relief valve or a worn expansion vessel.

In a cold snap, condensate pipes freeze or block. On combis, a faulty diverter valve gives hot water but no heating, or the reverse. A failed PCB (the boiler's main circuit board) can leave the display blank.

We repair Ideal, Viessmann, Intergas, Vokera, ATAG and Alpha boilers, among others, using genuine or manufacturer-approved parts.

What a boiler repair costs

The cost comes down to three things: the part that has failed, how long the job takes, and when you need us. A reset or a thawed condensate pipe takes little time and no parts. A new pump, diverter valve, gas valve or circuit board costs more, because the part is most of the bill and prices vary by make and model. Parts for older boilers can be scarce, which pushes the price up.

Once we've found the fault, we explain what's needed and what it will involve, so you can decide before the repair goes ahead.

Before you call, check these first

A few quick checks can save a call-out. Look at the pressure gauge: most sealed systems sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold, and below 1 bar the boiler may lock out. Check the thermostat and timer are calling for heat, the boiler has power and, on a prepayment gas meter, there's credit.

In freezing weather, find the plastic condensate pipe outside and thaw it with warm, not boiling, water. Then press reset once. If the fault comes back, leave it and get in touch.

Common Ideal fault codes. On Ideal Logic boilers, F1 means low water pressure, F2 means the flame has been lost, and L2 means the boiler failed to light and locked out, often a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather. Codes vary by model, so check your manual.

If you smell gas, turn it off at the meter, open the windows and call the National Gas Emergency Service. Never take the boiler's cover off yourself.

Repair or replace?

Most faults are worth repairing. It's time to think about a new boiler when it's over 10 to 15 years old and breaking down more than once a year, or when parts are discontinued and each repair takes longer. The same goes when a repair would cost a large share of a new boiler's price, or for an old non-condensing or back boiler, which uses far more gas than a modern one.

If a repair isn't worth doing, we'll tell you why, and the choice is always yours. Our boiler replacement page explains what a new boiler involves.
